Although Marine Corps University (MCU) officially started in 1989, it is made up of some of the Marines’ oldest schools dating back to 1891. The School of Application, which began in 1891, would eventually become the Officers Training School and moved to Quantico at the start of U.S. involvement in World War I. Realizing soldiers needed more training and experience before being sent off to war, the Field Officers Course and Company Grade Officers Course were added to the curriculum in 1920-21 by Major General Lejeune. In 1930, the school added Amphibious Warfare Senior and Junior courses to put more emphasis on science; the results of this proved to be successful during amphibious action in WWII. Post WWII, study grew to include helicopter and atomic warfare usage. 1971-1982 saw further growth for the school, starting with the first Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Quantico, and, 10 years later, the expansion of the Noncommissioned Officer Basic Course to multiple sites, as well as a Senior Course for Staff Sergeants and an Advanced Course for First and Master Sergeants, also at Quantico. Once the Marine Air Ground Task Force came about in the late 1980s, the five separate schools merged together to become MCU. In the 1990s, MCU once again underwent changes which brought about many more courses and programs, some of which included the Commander’s Program in 1993, the Logistics Instruction Branch in 1995, and the College of Continuing Education in 1997. Most courses were reorganized under the Training and Education Command which had become the school’s headquarters in 2000. Most recently, MCU was accredited to award graduate degrees to further assist military professionals seeking higher education.
